How to Choose the Right Serum for Your Skin Concern

How to Choose the Right Serum for Your Skin Concern

Serums can be of those skincare products that seem simple until it comes time to actually pick one. One promises hydration, another promises brighter skin, and another has an ingredient name you've seen 100 times but still aren't even sure what it does. When learning how to choose a serum, the goal shouldn't be to find the most popular product or most powerful formula. You're really just learning how to listen to what your skin is asking for and using basic ingredient knowledge to choose serums that will support it.

The good news? You do not need five different serums and a complicated 12 step routine to see results! When you use ingredients that actually match your skin's needs, your routine gets simplified and you actually get more out of your products.

Serum vs Moisturizer: What Is the Difference?

First things first: a serum and a moisturizer are not the same thing, but ideally, they work together.

When comparing serum vs moisturizer, your serum is going to act as the targeted step in your routine. Serums are typically lightweight formulas and they deliver concentrated ingredients that address specific skin concerns. Depending on the ingredients, that might mean helping with hydration, dullness, uneven texture, breakouts etc.

Moisturizers have a different job. Their main purpose is to support hydration and the skin barrier while helping maintain water retention within the skin.

Another easy way to differentiate the two is that your serum targets a specific concern while your moisturizer supports and locks everything in. Your skin can definitely benefit from using both though, especially if you're using active ingredients that can sometimes leave skin feeling more sensitive or dry.

How to Choose a Serum Based on Your Skin Concern

If you feel like your biggest question is just, “Which serum do I need?”, start with your biggest skin concern instead of the trendiest ingredient on your feed.

When you try to fix everything at once it usually leads to an overcrowded routine—and sometimes irritated skin. Start slow, pick your top two concerns and build up from there!

For Dry or Dehydrated Skin

If your skin feels tight, dry, looks dull, or seems to drink up moisturizer five minutes after you apply it, you could probably benefit from a hydrating serum.

Humectant ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and glycerin help attract water and support hydration deep within the skin's internal structure. Ingredients like panthenol can also help soothe and support the skin barrier.

Hydrating serums can work for almost every skin type, including oily and breakout prone skin. Remember: oily skin can still be dehydrated!

For Dull Skin

If your goal is brighter, more radiant skin, look for ingredients that support an even skin tone and healthy looking complexion.

Vitamin C is one of the most popular brightening ingredients in skincare because of its incredible antioxidant benefits and ability to support a healthy skin appearance. Niacinamide is another versatile option that can help improve the look of uneven tone while also supporting the skin's barrier.

The best serum for dull skin will depend on your current regimen and your skin's tolerance to active ingredients. More active does not automatically mean better.

And don't forget the basics, because your brightening serum can only do so much if you are skipping your daily SPF!

For Uneven Texture

For rough or uneven texture, ingredients that support healthy skin cell turnover will be especially helpful. Depending on your skin, that could include incorporating retinoids or exfoliating acids such as AHAs.

This is also where it is especially important to pay attention to the rest of your routine. If you already exfoliate regularly or use a device that physically exfoliates the skin, adding several exfoliating ingredients on top of that can be too much.

Smooth skin does not come from exfoliating it into oblivion. Give your skin time to recover and prioritize your barrier health.

For Breakout-Prone Skin

If breakouts are your main concern, look for ingredients that help manage congestion and excess oil while being gentle on the skin barrier. You never want your skin to feel stripped after adding a new product into your routine.

Salicylic acid is a popular choice because it is oil-soluble and can penetrate deep into the pore to do it's work. Mandelic acid penetrates the skin slower and gentler due to its large molecule size and removes pore buildup while improving the appearance of uneven texture.

The best serum for your skin type is usually not going to be the strongest product you can find. Breakout prone skin can easily become irritated, and irritation can make an already frustrating situation even harder to manage.

Massage in Serums

Can You Layer Two Serums?

Yes, layering two serums is completely fine, but you probably do not need to create a serum cocktail in your routine every morning and night.

If you want to use multiple active serums, make sure the formulas and active ingredients are compatible. For example, pairing a simple hydrating serum with a more intensive treatment serum is generally easier on the skin than stacking several strong exfoliating  products together.

When introducing active ingredients, start slowly and add one new product at a time. This gives you a much better idea of how your skin tolerates specific ingredients, so if irritation pops up, you actually know which product caused it.

Don't overload your barrier, sometimes a simple, consistent routine can get you much further!

Where Does Serum Go in Your Routine?

As a general rule, your skincare should be applied by molecular level. Which is really just a fancy way of saying to apply your products thinnest to thickest.

After cleansing, apply your serum before heavier creams and moisturizers. If you use toner or essence, those will come before your serum.

A simple routine might look like:

Cleanser → Toner (optional) → Serum → Moisturizer → SPF in the morning

Always remember to check the directions for your specific serum, especially when using active ingredients! Some formulas may be intended for morning use, nighttime use, or only a few times per week.

How Long Until a Serum Works?

I know we all wish skincare worked overnight, but unfortunately, our skin didn't get that memo.

So, then how long until a serum works? It's going to depend on multiple factors like, the ingredient, your concern, how consistently you use the serum, and your individual skin.

Some benefits, especially hydration, may be noticed fairly quickly. Changes involving uneven tone, texture, or breakouts generally require more time and consistent use. Our skin naturally goes through renewal cycles, so judging a treatment or product after only a few days usually wont show you the bigger picture.

Give a new serum enough time to do its job unless you are experiencing irritation, burning, swelling, or another adverse reaction. Taking progress photos in similar lighting can also make the everyday subtle improvements much easier to notice.

Finding the Right Serum for Your Skin

Learning how to choose a serum does not mean you have to become an ingredient expert overnight. Start by identifying your main concern, look for ingredients designed to support it, and consider how the serum will fit with the products and devices already in your routine.

Most importantly, give your skin some consistency. Switching products every week makes it nearly impossible to know what is actually working.

Your skincare routine does not need to be the longest one on the internet. The goal is to find products that make sense for your skin, use them correctly, and give them enough time to show you what they can do.
